Building Confidence to Teach STEM

Building instructors’ competence and confidence to deliver high-quality STEM learning experiences is a cornerstone to fulfilling LET’S GO mission to break the cycle of poverty through STEM education and workforce development.

“LET’S GO has been a critical partner with the Lakeland STEAM and Community Center that has resulted in expanding our organizational capacity to serve youth in STEAM and community based efforts. LET’S GO has trained numerous parents and community members to instruct our youth, facilitated STEM programs and provides personal mentoring to support minority youth in their entry to STEM careers.”
–Acacia Asbell, MSS

Our trained STEM Directors provide intensive support to the STEM Instructors at our school and youth organization partnerships. Instructors attend fun, hands-on workshops where they learn how to encourage youth to investigate and understand STEM concepts, enabling them to behave like young scientists and engineers. Instructors also become familiar with best practices in facilitating high-quality STEM learning experiences. To further increase their confidence and knowledge our STEM directors go out to sites providing ongoing one-to-one coaching, mentoring and technical assistance. This fall 59 instructors attended STEM workshops and/or one-to-one coaching sessions at our partnerships in DC, Baltimore and Haiti. 95% of surveyed instructors reported they were more confident in their ability to teach the content and facilitate informal STEM learning experiences after attending a LET’S GO STEM Workshop.

“I enjoyed teaching a lesson during the workshop. It allowed us to realize the gaps (i.e. topics to cover with students not mentioned in the lesson (curriculum)) and strategize.”
