Applications due by September 30th
LET’S GO is looking for a dedicated individual with a passion for STEM and Baltimore City Youth to join our team as a VISTA for school year 2017-18.
AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency. They focus their efforts to build the organizational, administrative, and financial capacity of organizations that fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and otherwise assist low-income communities.
LET’S GO Boys and Girls, Inc. works to alleviate poverty through high quality STEM education and long term work force development. To improve the quality of STEM Education, we partner with schools and youth organizations interested in offering STEM to their students and provide the materials, training, and support necessary to implement high quality, fun, ‘hands-on & minds-on’ STEM curricular activities. Once students have participated in multiple STEM programs and demonstrated interest and aptitude, they are considered STEM Scholars. We work to provide holistic support to these promising STEM Scholars, connecting them with the hard and soft skill resources they need to overcome barriers on the path to STEM careers.
This LET’S GO STEM Scholar Program will establish a system for providing students with targeted hard and soft skill interventions, supporting them as they persist and develop a ‘sense of identity’ integrating STEM, career, and self. Guided by feedback from community needs assessments, we will begin integrating the Baltimore STEM Ecosystem project initiated by the Maryland Out of School Time Network (MOST) with our efforts by aligning STEM resources with other resources aimed at developing soft skills (including communication, dress, goal setting, etc.) which often come from relationships with role models and mentors. Processes for tracking student outcomes will be established, and students’ “STEM Histories” will be expanded to include additional factors that affect STEM success. This project will also establish a STEM Scholar Community for connecting participating students across Baltimore city.
