The latest training for the STEM after-school program at Govans Elementary School featured some new faces! STEM Scholars Aniyah and Kaylin joined the training session to become Junior Assistants. They joined after-school teachers Ms. Crosby, Ms. Jones, Ms. Cooper, Ms. James, Ms. Gabuton, and high school intern Catarina in engineering humane traps to catch invasive species.
Aniyah and Kaylin have been in the after-school program at Govans since it began four years ago, and are two of Govans and LET’S GO’s shining stars. Both fifth-graders are part of the regional championship FIRST LEGO League team and participate in an elective computer science class.
Additionally, both participate in STEM activities outside of the after-school program and have their eyes on STEM careers. Aniyah has plans to attend Yale and become a surgeon, while Kaylin wants to follow in her hero Katherine Johnson’s footsteps and work at NASA.
They will be leaving Govans this year but will be continuing along their STEM pathway. Kaylin will be attending an Advanced Academics Middle school and Aniyah was accepted into the Ingenuity Project, a comprehensive, advanced math and science instructional program for gifted and advanced Baltimore City students in grades 6-12.
