LET’S GO is currently identifying national level internships for our STEM Scholars Program! Dr. Sharolyn Kamawaki-Schulz worked with our STEM students at Paul PCS in Washington DC to introduce the NIH HiSTEP program. The NIH program gives students the opportunity to explore STEM careers that may be otherwise unfamiliar to them and connect with peers that share the same interest.
The goal of HiSTEP is to expand the pipeline of students interested in biomedical and healthcare careers by providing real world experiences to high school students from schools with a large financially disadvantaged population. The application and interview processes are often rigorous and serve as the first hurdle students will need to overcome in their career journey.
A STEM scholars journey begins long before their pursuit of an internship. Acceptance into the NIH program will require the students to write thoughtful accounts of their personal journeys that express how this internship will assist them with future aspirations.
