These are some of the questions LET’S GO answered to 4th and 5th grade students and their parents and guardians at the School Choice Workshop on December 11, 2018. With a fantastic turnout of 20 parents and guardians and 16 current 4th and 5th grade students attending Govans Elementary, LET’S GO and the Fund for Educational Excellence provided the resources and understanding needed to help parents and guardians complete the Baltimore City middle school application process with confidence.
Two volunteer-led workshops were geared separately to parents and guardians and to their students. Parents and guardians learned how to prepare their students for choosing the right middle school through completing the application process successfully, understanding the schools’ entrance criteria and discovering some of the specialized academic and STEM programs that the schools have to offer.
Special attention was given to presenting the importance of good grades and attendance records that increase the likelihood of students being accepted into their choice middle school. Meanwhile, students were asked to consider what they are interested in and where they would like to see themselves in a future career. They learned how to consider these things when choosing which schools to apply for and were also taught the significance of their grades and attendance towards their composite scores, which can determine if they are competitive applicants for advanced academic middle school programs.
After hearing the community response to the event, LET’S GO is looking forward to a follow-up event in January at Govans. Students and their parents and guardians will have staff/volunteer-led support in filling out and submitting middle school choice applications before the January 18 deadline.
Tuesday’s success would not have been possible without the community support that came together to offer a great and educational event!
