Lakeland Teacher Spotlight: Putting the “A” into STEAM

Our amazing school-based instructors and coaches are a big part of what makes LET’S GO successful in our partner schools. Megan Chester from Lakeland Elementary/Middle School in Baltimore is one of those fantastic instructors.

Ms. Chester teaches kindergarten through 5th grade self-contained special education during the day, and is a FIRST LEGO League coach in the after-school program. This is her first time teaching in the after-school program, but has enjoyed it so much that she will be returning to teach two additional LEGO coding classes in the spring.

Along with the other FLL coach, Ms. Chester has been very busy preparing her team for their competition in February.  With her guidance, the team has learned to code a robot to perform tasks autonomously on their challenge board. They are also researching rain gardens in order to build one on the school grounds to help solve an erosion problem.

Ms. Chester has an art background and was excited to join the STEAM program to become more involved in the school community where she has met students she normally would not have the opportunity to interact with. Her artistic side is going to be on full display as she worka with the team to design their t-shirts for the FLL tournament.

“I like that they want to be here. They’re invested in the program and come to work.”
