Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process of developing the self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work and life success. Through SEL, students learn to manage their emotions, have empathy, solve problems, make responsible decisions and maintain healthy relationships. Research shows that gains in SEL result in better academic performance and workplace readiness skills such as problem solving, communication, and assertiveness. At LET’S GO, we see this evidence in our STEM learning experiences.
Our STEM competition teams, such as FIRST Lego League (FLL), go hand in hand with SEL. The FLL team comprises of youth who are exceptionally passionate about robotics. They feel a sense of belonging in FLL and take pride in their team. As they prepare for the upcoming FLL competition, they constantly integrate the values of trust, good communication, integrity, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. They understand the importance of allocating tasks, so that each team member can help accomplish their set goals for the team’s success. This has aided their relationship with one another and increased positive behaviors necessary for success.
