Baltimore City Public Schools (BCPS) offer School Choice to students entering middle or high school so that they can pursue the most appropriate learning environments that match their interests and career goals. LET’S GO offers targeted support to students and their families so that they can identify and apply to the school that best fits their needs with confidence.
This fall semester, at each of our Baltimore partner sites (Lakeland Elementary-Middle, Govans Elementary, and Westport Academy Elementary-Middle), LET’S GO has hosted the Fund for Educational Excellence (FFEE) to facilitate separate School Choice workshops for families and students. Families were guided on preparing their students for choosing the right school, completing the application process successfully, understanding the schools’ entrance criteria, and discovering some of the specialized academic and STEM programs that the schools have to offer.
Meanwhile, students learned how to consider career goals and interests when applying and how to understand their eligibility for schools with academic entrance criteria. Younger students who are not yet graduating this year attended interactive workshops aimed to highlight the long-term importance of their academic performance and attendance for School Choice next year.
In addition, in 2019 LET’S GO introduced a new offering within the STEM Scholars Program that provides our rising 6th and 9th grade STEM Scholars 1-1 mentoring in the School Choice application process. LET’S GO works with them to identify educational opportunities within BCPS that will support them on their pathway to success.
Many public middle and high schools in Baltimore offer Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, often STEM-focused, that pair academic knowledge with technical skills that prepare students for in-demand and high-waged jobs such as computer science, engineering, biosciences, and more. Our STEM Scholars School Choice mentoring provides resources for students to explore these STEM CTE options including how to schedule a shadow day or visit an open house with their families.
LET’S GO proudly collaborates with our partners to create a supportive environment for our workforce of tomorrow and continues to build capacity within the schools by sharing our resources and training to BCPS staff and administration. The School Choice process is complex, but it can be advantageous for low-income, high risk students in Baltimore.
We believes it is crucial to offer those educational services at LET’S GO to empower our youth and their families.
