Utilizing STEM to Catch the Wind

Students build a model of a wind turbine as a way to “Catch the Wind”

Wind is a very efficient renewable resource that can be ‘captured’ as a source of electrical power. Students experimented with making the blades turn as part of the wind collection process for a turbine. At the end of the session students were able to understand more about renewable vs nonrenewable energy sources.

Renewable energy is a clean, never ending source with minimal environmental issues compared to traditional non-renewable energy sources such as coal, gas, and oil. The very innovative students at Bishop Walker School for Boys worked extremely hard to tackle each difficult task LET’S GO’s Make It Work curriculum threw their way.

LET’S GO Make It Work is a curriculum in which students learn the engineering design process by completing a series of tasks throughout the school year or semester. Each week, students grew more curious in what the next challenge would be as they noticed how each task grew more thought provoking as the year progressed. The challenges presented offer situations and concepts that students use to understand current issues and can use to make the world a better place.
